Set in New York City’s gritty East Village, RENT  tells the unforgettable story of a group of young artists learning to survive, falling in love, finding their voices and living for today.  “Measuring their lives in love,” they strive for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic.  RENT is Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer and Tony Award winning musical, and the seventh longest-running show in Broadway history.  OYES has coordinated with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids organization for this event, to raise funds and join in an effort to spread awareness.

REVIEW BY Robert Townsend, Producer/Actor/Director

“As a filmmaker, I have worked with some of the top A-List talent in Hollywood, from Beyoncé to Halle Berry.  When I went to see this production of Rent by the OYES Theatre I didn’t know what to expect, but then as I watched the production I felt like I was watching fine New York theatre. This production of Rent is well directed, well choreographed and it features a cast of future Broadway stars. If you want to get your theatre fix check out this production of Rent.”

Book, Music and Lyrics by JONATHAN LARSON

Over the course of its groundbreaking 12-year New York run, RENT transformed the definition of musical theatre — and changed Broadway forever.  With book, music, and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, RENT is an imaginative retelling of the classic Puccini opera, La Boheme.  Set in New York City’s gritty East Village, Larson’s rock-opera tells the unforgettable story of a group of young artists learning to survive, falling in love, finding their voices and living for today.  “Measuring their lives in love,” they strive for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic.

MUSIC THEATRE INTERNATIONAL

With the permission of the Jonathan Larson Estate, this version of RENT has been adapted for use in schools and other producing organizations. While retaining the dramatic intent of this groundbreaking musical, minimal changes have been made to language and one song [“Contact”] has been deleted.

RENT was originally produced in New York by New York Theatre Workshop and on Broadway

OYES is a 501C3, not-for profit corporation, inspired by the need to make sure that kids have access to arts education, and the work we do plays a beautiful role in the entire Ojai Valley community.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

Ticket sales and tuitions only cover about half of the budgetary needs of OYES. This is why we need your help to continue offering the arts community of the Ojai Valley these wonderful events and services.

Here at OYES, we love what we do, working with our students and creating each production from start to finish.  With consistent funding we are able to keep growing as an organization and an essential community resource for youth and adult performing arts programs.  To learn more about OYES visit www.ojaiyes.org.

Help us meet this challenge. Make your contribution today to OYES’ 20K IN 20 DAYS Spring Fund Drive.  www.gofundme.com/oyes2015

Because OYES is a 501C3 corporation, donations are completely tax deductible, so you can rest assured that you are helping your community AND getting a tax write-off! It’s a win-win-win. You win, OYES continues, and our local actors and musicians continue to be provided with the opportunity to learn and enjoy their craft.
