REVIEW BY Robert Townsend, Producer/Actor/Director

“As a filmmaker, I have worked with some of the top A-List talent in Hollywood, from Beyoncé to Halle Berry.  When I went to see this production of Rent by the OYES Theatre I didn’t know what to expect, but then as I watched the production I felt like I was watching fine New York theatre. This production of Rent is well directed, well choreographed and it features a cast of future Broadway stars. If you want to get your theatre fix check out this production of Rent.”

Book, Music and Lyrics by JONATHAN LARSON

Over the course of its groundbreaking 12-year New York run, RENT transformed the definition of musical theatre — and changed Broadway forever.  With book, music, and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, RENT is an imaginative retelling of the classic Puccini opera, La Boheme.  Set in New York City’s gritty East Village, Larson’s rock-opera tells the unforgettable story of a group of young artists learning to survive, falling in love, finding their voices and living for today.  “Measuring their lives in love,” they strive for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic.

MUSIC THEATRE INTERNATIONAL

With the permission of the Jonathan Larson Estate, this version of RENT has been adapted for use in schools and other producing organizations. While retaining the dramatic intent of this groundbreaking musical, minimal changes have been made to language and one song [“Contact”] has been deleted.

RENT was originally produced in New York by New York Theatre Workshop and on Broadway
