This is a listing of our exciting Fall/Winter production, classes and workshops for The Lion King Experience, Jr!  OYES produces musicals in three different age groups (4-6, 7-11, 12-18). These are fully realized productions that perform on the OYES Youth Center Stage at the Ojai Valley Community Church.  Auditions for placement take place the first week of the program. Everyone who registers for the musicals will be in the show!

September 6th | 3-5pm – Performance Company (Grade 7th-10th, age 12-15) –

September 7th | 3-5pm – Lions Cast (Grade 2nd-5th, age 7-11)

September 8th | 3-5pm – Tigers Cast (Grade 2nd-5th, age 7-11)

  • What to prepare for auditions: Bring water, comfortable clothes, hair tied back (out of face).  Be prepared to sing 2 audition songs from selections HERE. You may also prepare a 30-second monologue, and/or movement or choreography to one of the audition tracks.  Please list any additional training such as voice lessons, dance lessons, or acting lessons at the time of your audition.

The Lion King, Jr Ensemble Chorus will rehearse and sing the enchanting ensemble music from this exciting show and perform in the Lion King, Jr performances.  (soloist parts by audition).  Vocal technique, musical direction and performance technique.  Performance based class.

Character List
Rafiki: A wise mandrill who acts as healer of the Pridelands and guides Simba on his journey home.
Mufasa: The strong, honorable, and wise lion who leads the Pridelands.
Sarabi: A featured lioness, Mufasa’s mate, and Simba’s mother.
Zazu: The anxious yet loyal assistant to Mufasa who is always busy trying to do his duty.
Scar: The antagonist of the show, overcome with jealousy of his brother, Mufasa, and nephew, Simba.
Young Simba: An adventurous and endearing cub who can’t wait to be king of the Pridelands.
Young Nala: A courageous lion and Young Simba’s best friend. She is not afraid to speak her mind.
Sarafina: A featured lioness and Nala’s mother.
Shenzi: One of Scar’s hyenas who plot to take over the Pridelands. She is the sassy one of the trio and is always looking
out for herself.
Banzai: A slick yet childish hyena who works for Scar. He would be the leader of the group if hyenas weren’t so lazy.
Ed: The third member of Scar’s trio of lackeys. He has a loud, cackling laugh that is his only form of communication.
Timon: An outcast meerkat who lives in the jungle with Pumbaa. He is afraid of his own shadow, but pretends to be the
confident, relaxed leader of the duo.
Pumbaa: A kindhearted, sensitive warthog who enjoys his simple life of grubs and relaxation.
Simba: Older Simba has more complex moments as he reunites with Nala, mourns his father, and returns to confront
Scar.
Nala: Nala Grows from a cub to a lioness before she confronts Scar.
Hyenas: Scar’s army, helping carry out his evil plot to take over the Pridelands.
Lionesses: The fierce hunters of the Pridelands and featured in “The Lioness Hunt,” “The Mourning,” and “Shadowland.”
Ensemble: The ensemble plays various inhabitants of the Pridelands, such as giraffes, elephants, antelopes, wildebeest,

Performance December 11 with the OYES Winter Concert, and January 13, 14, 15 with the Performance Company Cast of The Lion King, Jr.

OYES’ Youth Chorus is lead by professional singer, Julija Zonic, Youth Choir Director. Young singers will nurture healthy vocal technique, while  improving musical ear, pitch, and tone! Showcase performances joined by Rockin’ It Old School Senior chorus and backed by LIVE BAND the Fifth Dementia.  This course provides skilled vocal performance technique. For all levels.

Level 1 & 2 Accents & Dialects: 

Actors of  all ages often take shortcuts to quickly imitate a dialect in an audition situation, but the key to mastering any dialect is learning the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). In this 9-week class, John teaches an introduction and review of the IPA and applies it to various european English accents. With these fundamentals under your belt, you’ll have the tools necessary to learn any dialect.

Fun and enriching experience tailored for young actors!!  Culminates in a showcase event.

Set in the mystique of the French Antilles archipelago in the Carribbean Sea, this beloved musical weaves elements of the Romeo and Juliet story and of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Little Mermaid. With almost non-stop dance and music, Once On This Island, Jr., lights up the stage with the tale a young peasant girl who uses the power of love call upon the forces of the gods to wield her future and affect the divide of an Island with two different worlds and social classes.

This full-hearted musical tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest that will test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred, and even death.
