Set in the mystique of the French Antilles archipelago in the Carribbean Sea, this beloved musical weaves elements of the Romeo and Juliet story and of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Little Mermaid. With almost non-stop dance and music, Once On This Island, Jr., lights up the stage with the tale a young peasant girl who uses the power of love call upon the forces of the gods to wield her future and affect the divide of an Island with two different worlds and social classes.

A HEART-WARMING CARIBBEAN INSPIRED MUSICAL  based Hans Christian Andersen’s magical tale of love —  From the TONY Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime and Seussical) — 8 TONY nominations, including Best Musical, Book and Score!

This full-hearted musical tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest that will test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred, and even death.

Showcaes performances joined by Rockin’ It Old School Senior chorus and backed by LIVE BAND the Fifth Dementia.  This course provides skilled vocal performance technique. For all levels.

FILM PRODUCTION

Students of our Fall 2014 Film Production Class entered their OYES projects into Ojai Film Societies Young Filmmakers Competition.   Film projects must be reviewed before being accepted into the competition.  Nate Schmidt (OYES, Film Production Class) received a Merit Award for his film titled, Nate’s Party Central.   (Read more about the Ojai Film Societies Young Filmmakers Competition)

Actors will learn how to dig deep into text, character (Hagen, Misner and Stanislavski), and analysis. We build our stage technique, stage presence, body movement and vocal qualities; while practicing cold reading. We will explore soliloquies, Improv, ensemble building, poems and scenes around the theme of Valentine’s Day.

Wk 1: Building intuition and impulse pick out a sonnet/poem/song/scene and break it down

TECH CLASS / Stage-Craft

Learn the ropes of stagecraft!  This class features introduction and hands-on experience with theatre technology, lighting design, sound design, scenic design and painting.  Perfect for all levels of experience. This Fall, students will we part of the stage craft & backstage crew for our fall musical, FAME Jr!

WELCOME CLAIRE CLEARY TO OYES! 

The class will feature hands-on crafting a set and working behind the scenes with Claire Cleary.  Claire has been doing technical theatre for 15 years. In high school and college she has stage managed multiply productions, set built, programmed lighting consoles and lighting designed over 45 different shows.  Claire studied lighting design at The Theatre School at DePaul University and technical theatre at Ventura College.  Claire is currently working with Nordhoff’s drama and dance depts, as well as Besant Hill’s musical productions.
